NEW YORK CITY: ONE GARDEN ONE YEAR
DVD
edition of 108, numbered
Six-hundred photographs of a courtyard garden, located on the border of the Chelsea and Greenwich Village districts of New York Citytaken by Stathacos over the course of 12 monthslook at nature as a cultural mirror for birth, growth, death and decay. Zealley's scorea counterpoint of instrumental and vocal passages, and international site recordings gathered in Florence, New York City and Torontoserves as a guide to the four seasons. Experienced together, this dissolving audio/visual composite evokes a visual mantra, an observation on change, a year within 18-minutes.

"For a while now we've be working on a project called 72hr. Nuclear War; soliciting contributions of cover versions of the Sun Ra Arkestra song Nuclear War. For the weekend of March 23rd, in homage to the Yippies 1967 levitation of the Pentagon, we will arrange a series of five hand-built radio transmitters around the city of Philadelphia. For the entirety of the weekend we will broadcast the accumulated cover versions that we have received of the song throughout the city for all to listen to as a means of auditory exorcism. As the songs regenerate themselves through the ears, brains, and psyches of the individuals who listen to them we will begin the process of casting out the demons of governmental aggression summoned forth with such vigor over the last seven years. Trust us, it'll work." RED76.

SILENT | LISTEN
Over 25-years into the AIDS crisis... the record is now open.
The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto
International Performance: August 14, 2006
Featuring Ultra-red, Reena Katz, Scott Kerr, Isabelle Noel, Sandro Perri and Andrew Zealley. Ultra-red's decision to occupy major American art institutions is tactical. SILENT|LISTEN reconnects the art world and AIDS activists with memories of when the arts served as a crucial arena - in some communities, the only public space - for open discussions about the pandemic. Despite the current absence of AIDS-related exhibitions the crisis continues, abetted as always by refusals to remember, refusals to mourn, and refusals to act.
Central to this project is a reconsideration of the mission statement of ACT UP: "united in anger to end the AIDS crisis through direct action." In the current proto-fascist historical moment, SILENT|LISTEN invokes affective responses other than rage as constitutive of collective action. The alternative, waiting for anger, will prove politically disastrous in terms of AIDS and the larger political crisis.

A site-specific installation by Chrysanne Stathacos and Andrew Zealley, for NUIT BLANCHE, dusk to dawn, September 30 to October 1, 2006. Location: Philosopher's Walk, Toronto.
Visitors are invited to attach printed "wishes," available on-site, to the branches and trunk of a maple tree - which emanates a sound score. This sound/wishing tree becomes a meditative focus as visitors leave their symbolic messages. The score is fully realized when accompanied by sounds intrinsic to the area: footsteps and murmurings of passers-by, traffic in the distance, the hum of the city and the still of the night.

EMPATHETIC EAR is the audio installation for HALOS: DAVID BUCHAN AND ROBERT FLACK (curated by Andrew Zealley). EMPATHETIC EAR is conceived around spoken word cassette recordings, given to Zealley by Robert Flack (1957-1993), during the final months of the artist's life. The recordings psychic readings between Flack, fellow artist Chrysanne Stathacos, and seer Jeremy Stockwell are reduced to their visual sound wave state, silent "gates" through which manipulated fragments of Flack's original LP collection are glimpsed.
EMPATHETIC EAR is now available as a limited audio edition, 100 numbered copies. Packaged with a card depicting an original handwritten message by Robert Flack. Available at Art Metropole.

The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto

The Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery, Vancouver
June 25 through August 22, 2004
Structured in three movements, Zealleys composition plays with concepts of audio reflection, echo, fluxuating tempo and early music styles. The sound incorporates location recordings made in Prato and San Miniato (Tuscany).
THE QUICK & THE DEAD, the exhibition, is centered around a 17th century Tibetan convex Spirit Mirror once used by the State Oracle. Convex mirrors are a theme throughout THE QUICK & THE DEAD, from a series of 1969-70 photographs to recent sculptures. Bubble Machine #2 is a geodesic dome covered with motorcycle rear view mirrors. For Robert Morris incorporates surveillance mirrors. The mirrors in turn echo a kinetic sculpture producing a cascade of soap bubbles in the gallery, an image of the transitory nature of life and the emptiness of the ego. In the exhibition aspects of self-portraiture and self-exposure compound and complicate the meditation on life, death and individuality.

About the original exhibition at Garnet Press Gallery, January 19 to February 18, 1991:
"The layering of images and visual styles, and the references to assorted cultural and symbolic languages, and to the mystical body and alchemical transformation, create a rich maze. General evocations of different kinds of knowledge of the body -- visual, medical, mythological, spiritual -- are united in a pseudo-psychedelic pop sensibility and transcribed onto the body. (The fine line between mysticism and mystification is largely in the eye of the beholder: for all its esoterica, this work that seeks to engage with a contemporary audience).
"The same could be said of the sound environment by Andrew Zealley, which accompanied the installation of photographs. Rhythmic, pulsing, non-narrative, with allusions to various cultures and times, invoking/involving the body of the viewer, the sound transformed the space from gallery to shrine/dance club, and also altered the experience of viewing the photographs from largely visual to more fully physical. This effect is consistent with the artists' statement in a double-page spread in OUT Magazine (No.9, Jan/Feb1991), which stated that the work 'embodies ideas that integrate the body and mind as transformational tools.' It also states that the work is about, 'investigating ideas, disciplines and techniques designed to improve mental/physical health - serving to strengthen the immune system and encourage a positive state of mind.'" Hamish Buchanan, VIEWS (May 1991)
